We pledge to achieve carbon neutrality across our own operations by 2050. We will define a clear emissions baseline and set interim reduction targets for 2030 and 2040, focusing on direct (Scope 1) and energy-related (Scope 2) emissions, while progressively addressing material value-chain (Scope 3) emissions with suppliers and customers. Our ambition will be aligned with global climate goals and best-available science, adapted to the African steel context
We will implement a phased decarbonisation roadmap. In the near term, we will prioritise energy-efficiency, process optimisation and loss reduction across our plants. Over time, we will increase renewable energy use, maximise scrap where feasible, enhance electric-based technologies and invest in low-carbon solutions such as waste heat recovery, low-carbon fuels, hydrogen-ready processes and, where viable, carbon-capture technologies, supported by partnerships and innovative financing.
We will develop, pilot and scale a portfolio of “Green Steel” and low-carbon products with substantially lower embedded emissions than our current baseline. Our goal is to introduce pilot low-carbon product lines well before 2050 and expand them as technology and demand evolve. We will work towards measuring and disclosing the carbon footprint of key products and, in time, seek independent verification and environmental product declarations to provide transparent, credible data to customers in Ghana, across Africa and in export markets.
We pledge to move decisively towards a circular production model, with the ambition of achieving zero waste to landfill within a defined timeframe in our roadmap. We will minimise waste at source, increase recycling and recovery of process by-products, and explore technically sound waste-to-energy and other circular solutions. We will optimise raw material, water and energy use and manage broader environmental impacts, including air emissions, noise and local ecosystems, in line with applicable standards and community expectations
We commit to strong, responsible supply chains rooted in local and regional economies. We will strive to source at least 50% of our raw materials, scrap and services from local SMEs, where feasible and consistent with quality, safety and compliance. In parallel, we will progressively embed environmental, social and governance criteria into supplier selection and management, promoting responsible practices, respect for human rights and continuous improvement
Through our Care initiative and other programmes, we will continue to invest in education and vocational training for disabled persons, under-privileged youth and women, focusing on employable skills such as fabrication, welding, logistics and maintenance. We view this as part of a broader just transition: as technologies evolve, we will work to ensure workers and communities are not left behind, setting participation and outcome targets and partnering with educational institutions, development agencies and civil society.
We place the safety, wellbeing and dignity of our people at the centre of our business. We strive for a “zero harm” culture, continuously improving safety systems, training and infrastructure to prevent accidents and occupational illnesses. We will foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace, uphold labour and human-rights standards across our operations and expect our key partners to do the same.
We will strengthen governance and transparency around sustainability. Our Board and senior management will oversee climate, environmental and social risks and opportunities as part of strategic decision-making. We will work towards regular sustainability disclosures, including a climate transition plan, in line with evolving international standards and local regulations, act with integrity and maintain mechanisms for stakeholders to raise concerns and provide feedback.
Recognising that technology, regulation and expectations are evolving rapidly, we commit to regularly reviewing and updating these pledges and our roadmaps. We will engage constructively with policymakers, industry peers, customers, suppliers, communities and financial institutions so that B5 Plus not only complies with emerging standards but helps shape a more sustainable and inclusive steel industry in Africa and globally.
